Pass yourFAA tests.

Ground school is the classroom part of learning to fly. An instructor teaches the rules, weather, airspace and how the airplane works, so you pass the FAA written test (a multiple-choice exam) and your checkride (your final test with an FAA examiner).

All questions
  • What is the FAA written test?

A multiple-choice exam on the rules, weather, airspace, navigation and how the airplane works. You take it at an FAA testing center, and you must pass it before your checkride. Our evening class gets you ready for it.

  • What is a checkride?

Your final test with an FAA examiner. It starts with questions on the ground, then you fly with the examiner. Pass it and you get your certificate or rating.

  • Which class should I take first?

If you are new, start with the written test class. Most students take it alongside their first flight lessons. Come to a checkride weekend when your checkride is a month or two away, and use drop-in help any time you are stuck on a topic.

  • Do I have to fly with Desert Skies?

No. Students from any flight school are welcome in every class.

  • How does paying work?

For the written test class and the checkride weekend, $100 holds your seat when you sign up. The rest is due on the first day: the first night of class, or Saturday morning of the weekend. Drop-in help has no deposit. Your first visit is free, then $45 a visit.

  • Where are the classes?

In person, in our classroom at 2550 N Thunderbird Cir Ste 132, Mesa, AZ 85215, at Falcon Field.
