01The airfield

A real airportto learn at.

Falcon Field opened in September 1941 to train Royal Air Force and U.S. Army Air Corps pilots, picked for Arizona's dry climate and open space. It is still a training airport, owned and run by the City of Mesa.

  • A control tower

Falcon Tower is open 6:00 AM to 9:00 PM (5:30 AM in summer). Talking to a controller becomes routine early, not something you meet after your solo.

  • Two parallel runways

5,100 and 3,799 feet. Training traffic uses the shorter one when it can, which keeps pattern work moving.

  • Approaches at home

GPS approaches to both runways, so instrument students fly real approaches without leaving the field.
