02Reading a quote

What low quotesleave out.

Four things to ask any school, ours included. Each one moves a total by thousands.

  • Exam fees outside the price

ATP and Sierra Charlie list about $12,000 in examiner and test fees outside their prices.

    Ours

$8,550of examiner fees and written tests, inside every stage.

  • Hours at the FAA minimum

A private certificate takes at least 40 hours (14 CFR 61.109), and few students finish there. A quote built on minimums looks cheaper until the extra hours arrive.

    Ours

60 hrin the airplane for Private, plus 2.5 in the simulator, priced in.

  • Time building with a partner

At Chi-Rho Aviation, commercial time building assumes you split the airplane with another pilot, 95 hours at about $70 an hour.

    Ours

$180/hrsolo in our airplane with fuel, for all 85 hours. No partner to schedule around.

  • What an hour includes

Some rates are dry, with fuel added later, and some leave out the briefing before and after each lesson.

    Ours

105 hrof briefings across the program, plus $2,697 of ground school, fuel at 10 gallons an hour, and the instructor.

03Fair is fair

Where academiescome out ahead.

If one of these matters most to you, it is a good reason to choose them. Here is what we do instead.

  • Academies

    Airline agreements

ATP has formal agreements with American, Delta and United, 38 airline-backed Career Tracks, and tuition reimbursement from Horizon Air and PSA Airlines. It also hires its graduates as instructors.

    Desert Skies

No airline agreements. You finish with the same certificates and apply to airlines directly.

  • Academies

    A twin in the fleet

Every program here includes a multi-engine rating. ATP logs 25 hours of multi-engine time, and Venture West flies a Twin Comanche from Falcon Field.

    Desert Skies

No twin. Add the rating after Commercial; one at Falcon Field publishes $8,862.

  • Academies

    Housing

ATP runs shared apartments at some centers, though none at Mesa right now. Sierra Charlie lets you finance a $24,000 living allowance with your training.

    Desert Skies

None. Plan on your own place near Falcon Field.

  • Academies

    One price up front

ATP's tuition is fixed by starting point, up to $5,000 more at some centers, and paid in stages. Venture West bundles every checkride, knowledge test and material into its price.

    Desert Skies

An estimate, stage by stage, settled to the hours you fly: need fewer and you pay less, need more and you pay for them. Flex pays as you fly.

Questions

Fairquestions.

All questions
  • Why is your total lower than the academies?

Three reasons you can check: 60 of the hours are in a simulator where you pay only the instructor, the total leaves out the multi-engine rating the academies include, and there is no housing in it. The rest is the hourly rate for the airplane, fuel and instructor, listed on our costs page.

  • Is your number a quote?

It is a planning estimate from our current rates and the hours most students fly. Accelerated is estimated stage by stage and settled to the hours you fly. Flex is paid as you fly, lesson by lesson or in blocks.

  • How current are the other schools' prices?

Each was read from the school's own pages on Nov 2, 2026. Prices change, so check the links before you decide. We re-read them every quarter.

  • Should I just go to an academy?

If you want one fixed price, full-time immersion, housing or a formal airline track, an academy is built for that, and ATP is the largest. If you want to pay as you fly, train near home or keep a job while you train, that is what we are built for.
